Crowns

When cracks or chips affect the structure of a tooth, dental crowns prevent further damage and restore your teeth. At Armstrong Dental Studio in Upper East Side Manhattan, New York City, Dr. Omar Armstrong uses dental crowns to address structural damage to teeth and protect teeth that have undergone a root canal. Dental crowns can be made to match the color, shape, and appearance of your natural teeth, so they don’t distract from your smile. Call or use the online booking tool today and schedule an appointment to learn more about crowns.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a cap, typically made of porcelain or ceramic, Dr. Armstrong places over a damaged tooth. They can be useful in:

  • Protecting a weak, vulnerable tooth from fracturing
  • Protecting a tooth that underwent a root canal
  • Restoring a fractured tooth
  • Replacing a filling
  • Covering an implant or prosthetic for extra protection
  • Improving the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth

  • With modern advances in dentistry, crowns can be made to match the appearance of your natural tooth.

How are dental crowns made?

Dr. Armstrong uses cutting-edge 3D technology and digital scans that provide imaging of your tooth and its surrounding structures to have your crown made. A dental lab uses the imaging to custom-make your crown, so it fits your tooth perfectly. Dr. Armstrong will recommend what type of material your crown should be made of, which depends on factors like what condition your tooth is in and whether he’s dealing with a front or back tooth.

How does a dental crown procedure work?

Typically, a dental crown procedure involves two office visits. During your first appointment, Dr. Armstrong evaluates the condition of your tooth and may file it down with special tools to reduce its size. That allows your crown to fit better. Then, he captures the scanned images of your tooth, which he sends to the dental lab.

In the meantime, Dr. Armstrong may fit your tooth with a temporary crown. Once your crown is ready, you come back in for a second appointment where Dr. Armstrong removes your temporary crown and bonds your permanent crown with adhesive. It may take a few weeks, but your dental crown will look, feel, and function as a normal tooth would.

How long do dental crowns last?

Your choices dictate how long your crown lasts, but as long as you take good care of your crown, there’s no reason it shouldn’t last at least 15 years. Maintain good oral hygiene habits by brushing and flossing regularly and eating a balanced diet.
