Root Canal

There are over 14 million root canals performed each year, making it easily one of the most common dental procedures. At Armstrong Dental Studio in Upper East Side Manhattan, New York City, Dr. Omar Armstrong routinely performs root canal therapy to save teeth from infection and decay. Root canal therapy is often the most effective method to prevent losing teeth and restore them to optimal health, appearance, and function. Call or use the online booking tool today if you need to schedule an appointment for a root canal.

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a common dental procedure that addresses the infection of a tooth’s pulp inside its root. During a root canal, Dr. Armstrong accesses the damaged pulp, removes it, and then seals your tooth. Injuries, cracks, fractures, or deep cavities can cause infection to the pulp. In many cases of tooth decay or injury, without a root canal, your tooth’s condition can worsen and need to be extracted.

How does a root canal procedure work?

During root canal therapy, Dr. Armstrong first applies local anesthesia to the affected tooth so you won’t feel anything. He may use digital scans to get a clearer picture of your tooth and surrounding bone before the procedure. Dr. Armstrong uses a rubber sheet placed around your tooth to keep the treatment area dry and saliva-free. He then uses special tools to create an opening on top of your tooth so he can access the pulp inside. Next, he removes the diseased pulp and cleans the area properly, removing all bacteria. Afterward, he seals your tooth. Typically, Dr. Armstrong also places a dental crown, a cap to protect your tooth from any damage, after performing a root canal.

What happens after a root canal?

After you undergo a root canal, Dr. Armstrong schedules a follow-up appointment with you to monitor your progress and make sure there are no signs of infection. Typically, the risks after a root canal are minimal. However, if you experience any of the following, visit Dr. Armstrong right away:

  • Severe pain for more than a few days
  • Swelling inside or outside your mouth
  • Uneven bite
  • Your crown falls out of place
  • Allergic reaction, such as itching or a rash

Is a root canal painful?

Contrary to popular belief, root canal therapy relieves pain, not causes it. Your infected pulp is what causes painful symptoms. Root canal procedures get rid of the infection and restore your tooth to optimal health, so you don’t feel any more pain. How long do dental crowns last?

Your choices dictate how long your crown lasts, but as long as you take good care of your crown, there’s no reason it shouldn’t last at least 15 years. Maintain good oral hygiene habits by brushing and flossing regularly and eating a balanced diet. If you need a crown to protect or restore a damaged tooth, call or use the online booking tool and schedule an appointment at the office today.
