When are tooth extractions necessary?

There are procedures, such as root canals, to save teeth. However, in some cases, removing your tooth with an extraction procedure becomes necessary. Severe cavities affecting too much of your tooth’s structure can make repairing your tooth impossible. Deep fractures that cause too much damage or cracks that extend below your gum line are other primary examples of when you would need an extraction.

How does a tooth extraction work?

During a tooth extraction procedure, Dr. Armstrong first numbs your tooth with anesthesia so that you don’t feel any pain or discomfort. He uses a dental appliance similar to a lever to loosen your tooth out of its socket. Finally, he uses forceps to remove your tooth. A common type of extraction is a wisdom tooth extraction to remove crowded third molars in the back of your mouth. Your wisdom teeth are the last of your teeth to come in after your permanent teeth, leaving them little room. They often arrive in your early 20s, and removing them is a very common procedure. Extractions are typically brief procedures.

What happens after a tooth extraction?

After your extraction, you bite on gauze for about 45 minutes to stop the natural blood flow. Dr. Armstrong advises you on how to manage the light bleeding that will likely occur over the following 24 hours. You can use ice packs to bring down the inflammation and swelling. Since your mouth will be sensitive, only eat soft foods like applesauce and yogurt. Typically, it takes about two weeks to heal fully. Dr. Armstrong schedules a follow-up appointment with you to monitor your progress. For wisdom teeth extractions, Dr. Armstrong may prescribe pain medication to help manage swelling, inflammation, and pressure you feel.

Is a tooth extraction safe?

Yes, tooth extractions are very safe procedures. However, as is the case with all procedures, there are minimal risks, including:

  • Long-lasting numbness
  • Jaw soreness
  • Accidental damage to surrounding teeth
  • Infection
  • Dry socket

Call the office immediately if after an extraction pain and swelling doesn’t get better within a few days or if you experience anything out of the ordinary.
